the connecticut shooting investigation. i am bill himer. live in newtown, connecticut. e. fox report. 36 hours removed from a gunman unleashing a shooting massacre in the elementary school. population 600 students from kindergarten to fourth. it is a day that changed the housetown forever. machines -- members of the shooter family releasing a statement saying they felt heart felt sorrow. each of the 22 children who died was aged 6 or 7 and all thought to be in the first grade. 12 of them were girls and eight were boys, the gunman shot child multiple times. we are told that at least one child was shot 11 times inside of the classroom. this is a picture of the gunman identified as 20 year old adam lanza that is a picture from six years ago at the age of 14. he lived with his mother in the town of newtown 10 miles from the school. a school that he drove his own mother's car to waking up in the morn shooting her in the head. today we heard from the shooter's aunt. she said the mother home schooled him after a dispute with the public school system, but no one in the family expected him to be respon

? tonight there is word of a possible motive in the newtown massacre. a man who says he knew the shooter's family tells fox news.com that adam lanza was upset because his mother was planning to commit him to a psychiatric facility. we can't confirm that, but a senior law enforcement official does back it up. saying investigators are looking at whether lanza was angry over plans for his future mental health treatment. police say lanza shot and killed his mother friday morning before driving to that elementary school. there they say he murdered 20 children and six adults and then killed himself. we have team fox coverage. molly line on how kids are going back to school. first to rick leventhal with the latest on the investigation. police searched lanza's home for clues. one thing they reportedly did not find is of great interest. >> right. according to the hartford current, they found no prescription drugs in the home and no record that adam lanza was being treated for as bergers, autism or any mental illness. but investigators are said to be serving search warrants to obtain medical recor

's a terrifying situation, obviously for all parents, not even just in newtown and we will see you posted and new information as soon as we get it into our newsroom. bill: a little bit here from the "associated press." according to the superintendent speaking with reporters there at the office in newtown the district hats been on lockdown as a preventative measure. this is important now, the superintendent's secretary says that reports of a shooting are not co confirmed. we'll work through this together and gather information as we can. it just crossed the wires about seven minutes ago. be patient with us as we work through it. you mentioned a number of people escorted out of the building, perhaps that is the case. this bit of information from the superintendent's office -- alisyn: is comforting, that's comforting if it's not confirmed, where we're getting our information it's just a very tiny blurb from a website there that says that police are reporting a number of injured parties. let's hope that in the confusion of these early reports that that is not accurate, but, again, it's impossible to

events like the one in newtown. first, the psychologist of the killer. second, the environment of violence in our culture. third, the easy access to guns. each of these might explain any single event, but what we should be trying to understand is not one single event, but why we have so many of them. let's look at the facts. according to the u.n.'s office on drugs and crime, the u.s. gun homicide rate is 30 times that of france or australia. it is 12 times higher than the average for other developed countries. why is that? if psychology is the main course, we should see that we have 12 times as many psychologically disturbed people as the average. we don't. in fact, america takes mental disorders seriously, treats them and doesn't stigmatize them. we do better in this area than most of our peers. is america's popular culture much worse than other rich countries? not really since it's largely the same popular culture worldwide. england and wales are exposed to cultural influences as the u.s. yet, their rate of gun homicide is some 3% of ours. the japanese are at the cutting edge
